Making Dried Beans in the Crockpot

Many people just buy canned beans at the store rather than cooking up a batch of dried ones. Making dried beans is really simple, and it can save you a lot of money. When you consider that a one pound bag of dried beans costs just under $2.00 at most stores and a can of readymade beans costs almost a dollar, it is worth doing the math. A pound of dried beans will make the same amount you get in 3 cans of readymade beans. You are saving money by taking the time to do this yourself.

You could cook them in a kettle on the stove, but it is super simple to make the beans in your crockpot. It does take a long time, but according to the First Energy Corporation of Ohio, a crockpot takes about 2 cents per hour to run, so you are still saving money. You also get the satisfaction of knowing exactly what you put in with your beans. When you buy canned beans you have to take the manufacturer's word that they did not put anything else in it. With the risk of BpA in the linings of cans, why add this potential toxin to your family's meals when it is so easy to avoid by making the beans yourself?

You can make a big pot of chili or bean soup, or you can divide up your beans into freezer bags and save the beans for other dishes by putting them in the freezer. You can use frozen beans just like canned beans, so you can make your own convenience foods while you let your crockpot do all the work. Your family gets healthy food, you get to save money, and you have a ready supply of beans to use in anything from salad to main dishes. Explore the many jobs your crockpot can do for you to make your life healthier and easier. You will be amazed at what you can do with your simple crockpot.

Recipe for Preparing Beans

What You Need

1 bag of beans (black beans, navy beans, great northern beans, pinto beans, etc)
Water

How to Make It

Pour the dried beans of your choice into a colander and rinse them. Remove any beans that are damaged or shriveled.

Pour beans into the crockpot. Add just enough water to cover all the beans plus two more inches.

Put the cover on the crockpot. Let the beans soak in the water without any heat overnight or at least 6 hours. Dump the water and rinse the beans again.

Put the beans back in the crockpot and again cover it with enough water to reach 2 inches above the beans.

Cover the crockpot and turn the heat on low. Let the beans cook for 8 hours. Drain the beans when they are just tender.

Freeze portions in containers or freezer bags for later use. They will keep in the fridge for a week and in the freezer for 6 months.

Use the same way you would use canned beans in any recipes you want to make.
